1) What
is your ethnicity? Chinese American
2) Do you watch Fresh off the Boat? If not, are you familiar with it? No, but I’ve heard about it 3) If you do watch, why do you watch the show? I don’t watch it, but just because I haven’t had time to. My mom watches it, though. She keeps trying to convince me to start. 4) Do you agree, support, or relate to representation of Asian Americans in the show? I haven’t seen it, but from what my mom says, it seems to be an accurate portrayal. 5) Are you aware of any other shows in the past 20 years that focus(ed) on the experiences of Asian Americans? No, none 6) Why do you think ABC is airing a show like Fresh off the Boat? Honestly, I don’t think you need to watch the show to know this one. It’s money, plain and simple. If diversity is selling right now, a network will have diverse programming. If the ratings drop or if the show stops making money, trust me, it’ll be gone. 7) If you're aware of or watch Black-ish, Cristela, or other similar diverse TV shows, do you think the reasons they are being aired is similar to or different than ABC's reasons for airing Fresh off the Boat? Howso? I’m not that familiar with the shows, but I know they focus on diverse families, and I’d have to say, again, it’s money. ABC wants to make money, and they’ll air shows that sell and have good ratings. If that stops, the shows will be cancelled. |

2) Do you watch Fresh off the Boat? If not, are you familiar with it? A little bit, but I’m not up to date 3) If you do watch, why do you watch the show? Well, I started watching it because of all the hype around the show, particularly within the Chinese American communities, but I’ve continued to watch it because I enjoy the show and relate to it. 4) Do you agree, support, or relate to representation of Asian Americans in the show? All three, I guess. I really relate to the experience of being here as a first generation, and I see a lot of similarities between the parents and my own parents. 5) Are you aware of any other shows in the past 20 years that focus(ed) on the experiences of Asian Americans? No, I don’t remember any growing up 6) Why do you think ABC is airing a show like Fresh off the Boat? I think ABC is just trying to be more diverse, but I’m sure there’s probably a money aspect to it as well. 7) If you're aware of or watch Black-ish, Cristela, or other similar diverse TV shows, do you think the reasons they are being aired is similar to or different than ABC's reasons for airing Fresh off the Boat? Howso? I haven’t seen them, but I know the general basis behind them, and I’d assume that the motivation is just like Fresh off the Boat – diversity and money. |

2) Do you watch Fresh off the Boat? If not, are you familiar with it? I’ve only seen the first episode. 3) If you do watch, why do you watch the show? I want to go back and watch it when I have time, mostly because the first episode really resonated with me. 4) Do you agree, support, or relate to representation of Asian Americans in the show? I support and relate to it, or at least to the first episode. I felt like I could connect to the characters and their experiences really well, more than other television shows, at least in regards to some of the specific experiences in my life that are related to my ABC identity. 5) Are you aware of any other shows in the past 20 years that focus(ed) on the experiences of Asian Americans? No, I can’t think of any besides those originating in Asian countries. 6) Why do you think ABC is airing a show like Fresh off the Boat? I think ABC is just becoming more diverse, and since Asians are increasing in number in the US, it makes sense for ABC to make a show geared toward their experiences. 7) If you're aware of or watch Black-ish, Cristela, or other similar diverse TV shows, do you think the reasons they are being aired is similar to or different than ABC's reasons for airing Fresh off the Boat? Howso? I’ve heard of them, but I don’t watch them or really understand their premise, besides that they follow African and Latino American families. My guess would be that ABC just wants to continue the diversity trend. |

2) Do you watch Fresh off the Boat? If not, are you familiar with it? Nope, but I’ve heard of it. I think my mom watches it. 3) If you do watch, why do you watch the show? N/A 4) Do you agree, support, or relate to representation of Asian Americans in the show? I haven’t seen it, but my mom said it reminded me of her when she first moved to the U.S. I’d say it’s fairly representative, at least for my family. 5) Are you aware of any other shows in the past 20 years that focus(ed) on the experiences of Asian Americans? Not that I know of. 6) Why do you think ABC is airing a show like Fresh off the Boat? I think there’s a diversity component to it. Chinese Americans in particular have gained a decent bit of status in the U.S. as being a central part of some work forces, so I think ABC knows it would be good to start representing that diversity. 7) If you're aware of or watch Black-ish, Cristela, or other similar diverse TV shows, do you think the reasons they are being aired is similar to or different than ABC's reasons for airing Fresh off the Boat? Howso? I haven’t heard of them, but I would guess it’s for the same reason: diversity. |
